Math App of the Day: Desmos
Desmos is a mobile graphing app created by Eli Luberhoff in 2007. It is designed to be used in place of a calculator in the classroom, so that students are able to utilize a simplified calculator to help them graph problems, instead of a more complicated traditional calculator.
Teachers can feel obligated to spend class time to explain how to use a graphing calculator to their students. Instead of going through step-by-step processes of calculator use, students are able to use the web application with ease, by typing in their desired equation in order to have an output of a graph. In most senior math classes at the secondary level, students use their graphing calculators in order to find intersections of the point (i.e. systems of equations). The level of simplicity is perfect for students who do not feel they are able to operate a calculator.
The Desmos application is able to be used in the classroom as a supplemental graphing calculator. Students can be given iPads with the calculator open on App Lock. This will allow students to use the application without the fret of them going into the internet. Desmos has also become a very popular way of teachers displaying problems to their students.
Instead of drawing out a graph for students, teachers are able to project the application through their computer and explain the graph more clearly. Gone are the days where teachers feel to have adequate drawing abilities in order to properly explain themselves to their students. Graphing web applications like these allow students and teachers to easily access graphs without the fear of not being able to understand them!
